The mercenaries were promised a posting behind the lines, but they ended up on the front lines.

In June, the Ukrainian military captured five Colombian citizens who were fighting on the side of the Russian Federation. They had been recruited into the Russian army under the pretense of serving in the rear.

As reports the 33rd Separate Mechanized Brigade, Russia is involving citizens of other countries in the war against Ukraine. In this way, the occupiers are trying to make up for significant personnel losses.

“Due to significant losses, the occupiers are replenishing their forces with citizens of other countries and promising them the moon—promises they will never see fulfilled,” the statement reads.

The prisoners said that at first they did not realize what kind of trap they had fallen into.

In less than two months, they realized that instead of the promised rear-area duties, they would be forced to participate in assaults.

According to the Ukrainian military, the Colombians simply could not refuse combat missions. The Russian military was hot on their heels, and any attempt to retreat could have resulted in imprisonment or even execution.

In such a situation, being taken prisoner was effectively the only way for the mercenaries to avoid further combat.
