Poland And Romania Scrambled Fighter Jets In Response To Russian Drones

On the night of September 15, Poland and Romania scrambled their air forces in response to the appearance of Russian jet drones in western Ukraine.

No violations of either country’s airspace were recorded.

At around 4 a.m., the Polish Operational Command stated that fighter jets had taken to the skies, and that ground-based air defense systems had been placed on high alert “due to the activity of Russian Federation jet-powered UAVs striking Ukrainian territory,” according to the country’s Armed Forces Operational Command.

At 6:30 a.m., an update was published stating that the potential threat had passed, and as a result, forces and assets are returning to standard operational procedures.

Overnight, the Romanian Army’s radar systems detected several aerial targets from the Ukrainian side near the border with Romania. Specifically, at 3:10 a.m., a target was detected 35 km north of Kiliya, reports the country’s Ministry of Defense.

To monitor the situation, two Romanian F-16s were scrambled, and an alert was issued in the border county of Tulcea.

The next two drones were detected at 4:20 a.m., 30 km north of the village of Periprava, located on the Romanian side of the Danube across from Vilkovo; an air alert was reissued in this area.
Ultimately, no violations of Romanian airspace were recorded, and the alert was lifted at 5:18 a.m.
