A soccer expert called on Germans to practice “positive patriotism.”

Germany's national team head coach Jürgen Klopp, at a press conference announcing the roster for his first match in charge, mentioned the recent victory of the “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) party in the Saxony elections. He stated that he did not want to “entrust national pride to the wrong people,” according to AFP.

On September 6, the AfD won nearly 44% of the vote in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt.

“An insane amount of everything has happened lately. There were elections that some people will probably consider normal. But others will think, ‘My God, what on earth is going on here?’” Klopp said, without mentioning the AfD directly.

Klopp noted that as someone from the world of sports, he “would like to reclaim the flag for myself and for all of us,” and called for “positive patriotism.” “I can be proud to be German while remaining open-minded, supportive of diversity, kind, and friendly,” he added.
