Zelenskyy Launched Operation M&M's

Ukraine is closing its airspace to Russian aircraft.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s statement that Russian airspace is “becoming dangerous” for airlines effectively marks the start of an operation codenamed M&M’s. This was stated by The Atlantic journalist Simon Shuster, who was the first to report on Ukraine’s plans to carry out this operation back in August.

According to the journalist, one of the sources who told him about the upcoming operation confirmed that Zelenskyy’s remarks referred specifically to M&M’s.

On September 1, the Ukrainian president stated that Russian airspace is becoming dangerous for airlines, insurers, and other participants in international air transport. At the same time, he emphasized that Ukraine poses no threat to civil aviation and has no intention of attacking passenger aircraft. However, he noted that the situation with air travel is changing due to the activity of drones in the skies over Russia.

Separately, Zelenskyy addressed airlines that continue to operate flights to Russian airports—in particular, to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other key destinations.

“The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our relevant agencies will provide international organizations with full information about the dangers in Russian airspace. Civil aviation has no place among drones,” the president emphasized.

Earlier, on August 21, The Atlantic reported, citing sources, that Ukraine was preparing Operation M&M’s using swarms of autonomous drones powered by artificial intelligence. As the publication’s journalists wrote, the plan called for the daily launch of up to a thousand small drones, which were intended to disrupt operations at Russia’s capital airports, force international airlines to cancel flights to Moscow, further isolate the Russian elite, and exert additional pressure on the Kremlin, pushing it toward negotiations.
