According to preliminary official results, the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (Friedrich Merz) received only 4.9% of the vote in the state parliament election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, held on Sunday, September 20. After the first exit poll results were announced—when it became clear that Merz’s party was teetering on the brink of failing to enter the state parliament—the German chancellor called the situation a “catastrophe.” At the same time, he promised to continue his political course—both as head of the CDU and as chancellor. “Reforms are the best remedy against authoritarianism,” Merz said.

Key Results of the September 20 State Elections

The far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) took first place in the state parliament election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, receiving 38.2% of the vote. In second place was the SPD of the state’s incumbent premier Manuela Schwesig with 35.5%.

AfD co-chair Tino Chrupalla (Tino Chrupalla), in an interview with DW after the first exit poll results were announced, called on Merz to resign. “This is what citizens would expect, and this is what the country deserves,” the far-right politician said.

In the concurrent elections for the Berlin House of Representatives, the CDU is in second place behind the Left Party, only slightly ahead of the AfD.
