Minsk Residents Got Into An Argument Over A 200-ruble Bill

Surprisingly, they were both right.
A familiar banknote sparked a dispute between two Minsk residents. One was convinced that a new banknote had been issued in Belarus, while the other insisted that no such issue had taken place. The publication Myfin.by.
According to one of the participants in the debate, the men decided to check the information online. It turned out that a new banknote had indeed been introduced, but it wasn’t a new denomination—rather, it was a redesigned version of the existing 200-ruble bill.
The second participant in the debate explained his position by saying that “everything is almost the same as it was; they just updated the old bill.”
This story prompted us to take a closer look at exactly what has changed in the updated banknote.
What Has Changed in the 200-ruble Bill
On June 1, 2026, the National Bank put a new 200-ruble bill of the 2009 model into circulation.
The banknote was issued as part of a planned update to the design and security features of the 2009-model banknotes, as well as to replace worn-out and damaged currency.
Although the overall design of the new banknote conceptually retains the style of the previous 200-ruble banknote, key elements have been updated:
The facsimile of Pyotr Prokopovich’s signature has been replaced with a facsimile of the signature of National Bank Board Chairman Roman Golovchenko.
The “2009” model year has been replaced with “2026,” the year the banknote was issued into circulation.
The name of the architectural landmark depicted on the front side has been specified: the P. V. Maslenikov Mogilev Regional Art Museum.
The security features have been modernized: an additional watermark filigree has been added, and the security thread with visual effects has been expanded.
The banknote’s durability has been improved through double-sided varnishing.
The new banknotes are manufactured by the joint-stock company “Goznak” (Russia).
The 200-ruble banknotes of the 2009 series currently in circulation remain legal tender in the Republic of Belarus.
In the end, the first participant was correct in stating that a new banknote had been introduced, while the second was correct in noting that no new denomination had been introduced: the existing 200-ruble note was updated by changing its design and security features.
