"Do You Grow Carrots On The Space Station?"

Belarusian vegetables are more expensive than fruit imported from another continent.

A Minsk resident, zarkovskiipavel, shared the prices of carrots and tomatoes at her local store.

“Every time I walk into a Minsk supermarket, my economic compass goes completely haywire,” she writes. “There are bananas from Ecuador that sailed across the ocean on a cargo ship, flew by plane, and went through customs and sanitary inspections—a nominal five rubles per kilo. Right next to them are local Belarusian carrots or tomatoes, grown in a greenhouse near Minsk, thirty kilometers from the store—11 rubles per kilo. “Do you grow them up there at the space station?”

Belarusians provided examples of vegetable prices in the country’s stores. The website Charter97.org publishes some comments:

— Tomato prices range from 6 to 18 rubles per kilogram. Same goes for the rest.

— Does an academic personally water every single tomato while listening to classical music? In a country where agriculture has been elevated to a cult, the cost of a local salad made with cucumbers and greens is starting to rival that of a marbled beef steak.

— Pink tomato, Belarus: 3.5 rubles. Yes, all kinds of cherry tomatoes are expensive, but not all of them are from Belarus.
