Marine Drones Blew Up The Unique Ship NEFRIT From Novorossiysk In Sochi

The "Pantsir" air defense system has also been hit.

In Sochi, two loud explosions were heard in the area of the seaport, according to online reports. Clouds of smoke rose above the port, and the target may have been a Russian ship that had previously been operating near the port of Novorossiysk. A Russian strategic facility on the Black Sea was attacked by unmanned surface vessels (USVs).

The explosions in Sochi occurred around 9:45 a.m. on September 3, according to the Telegram channel Exilenova+. Russians have flooded the internet with videos showing footage of the incident. It is noted that a ship was hit, as well as a “Pantsir” air defense system that was docked at the pier.

In one of the videos, the air defense system—which may have been the drones’ target—was visible, and nearby, 10–20 meters away, was a column of smoke following an explosion. The channel published a satellite photo of the piers in Sochi and clarified that no particularly interesting targets were visible there, but that the NEFRIT vessel had been struck. NEFRIT is a multipurpose supply vessel (MPSV) used for offshore oil and gas operations that previously operated in Novorossiysk, as explained online.

“The NEFRIT vessel, which was struck by a Ukrainian BEK at the pier in Sochi, was, according to publicly available information, operating in the Novorossiysk and Black Sea regions. It flies (or flew) the Russian flag,” the Exilenova+ channel reported.

NEFRIT (“Nefrit”)—a support vessel mentioned in a statement by Gazprom in October 2022: The Russians sent this vessel to the Baltic Sea, where three of the four Nord Stream pipelines were blown up a few weeks ago. The vessel was designed to deliver necessary supplies to offshore platforms: it transported crews, auxiliary production equipment, food, water, etc. The ship is owned by the company “Alliance” and was registered in the port of St. Petersburg. Its dimensions are 90 meters long, 18 meters wide, with a draft of 6 meters, and a capacity of nearly 4,000 metric tons.
