Trump Demanded That AI Be Renamed "superintelligence"

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to replace the term “artificial intelligence” (AI) with “superintelligence” (SI) in official documents and government communications. “The executive order directs all departments and agencies to use the terms ‘superintelligence’ and ‘SI’ in official correspondence, public communications, policy documents, and non-legislative documents within the executive branch, and to discontinue the use of the terms ‘artificial intelligence’ or ‘AI,’—the White House reported.

According to the executive order, the President’s Assistant for Science and Technology is to develop a federal definition of the terms “superintelligence” and “SI” that reflects the current state of this technological field. The White House explained that the name change was driven by a desire to fully reflect the capabilities of modern technologies. “The term ‘superintelligence’ conveys the true potential of the technologies being developed today, opening up new forms of human creativity,” the presidential administration noted.

Trump first referred to AI as “superintelligence” during a speech at the UN General Assembly. The White House chief stated that the term “artificial” is incorrect when applied to neural networks, as they are “astonishingly” intelligent. Following this, the State Department recommended that diplomats use the term “superintelligence.”

Also the day before, on September 29, Trump signed an agreement with the heads of Google, Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, xAI, and Nvidia on AI safety oversight. “Every company that trains and deploys advanced models must have robust internal processes and controls. This is necessary to ensure that their technologies behave appropriately and that any issues are promptly identified and addressed,” the document states. To this end, the companies agreed to implement internal model monitoring, independent audits, and committees under their boards of directors to oversee these control systems.

Earlier, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a slowdown in the development of advanced AI. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman supported him. Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the “godfather” of AI, warned of the catastrophic consequences of creating super-powerful neural networks. Trump, for his part, called the idea that AI would “take over and destroy the world” a myth.
