Reuters Named The Frontrunner In The Vote For UN Secretary-General Candidates

The organization's new head will take office on January 1, 2027

On September 29, an informal, secret poll—the fourth of its kind—was held among the 15 members of the Security Council to determine who should become the new UN Secretary-General, according to Reuters.

Once again, Rebecca Greenspan of Costa Rica came out on top.

She also won the first and third secret polls of Security Council members. During the second poll, the frontrunner was Permanent Representative Carolyn Rodriguez-Birkett, who is currently Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the UN.

The new UN Secretary-General will take office on January 1, 2027 (for a five-year term). The Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council. Through trial ballots, the Security Council determines the candidate it will recommend to the General Assembly for approval. Such trial secret ballots are currently taking place.

At present, seven candidates are vying for the post of UN Secretary-General. It is possible that new candidates will enter the race in the future. The current head of the organization António Guterres will leave his post at the end of 2026. He has served two consecutive terms.
