Latvia Has Announced Its Readiness To Host Nuclear Weapons On Its Territory

The country's president outlined the key condition for such a decision.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs has stated his willingness to deploy nuclear weapons on Latvian territory if NATO makes a collective decision and the need arises.

The Latvian president’s statement is reported by Delfi.

Rinkevičs commented on reports that the United Kingdom had offered nuclear protection to the member countries of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF): the Baltic states, Northern European countries, and the Netherlands.

“If there were no nuclear weapons, there would be more conventional wars in Europe,” he said.

According to Rinkēvičs, Latvia’s constitution does not prohibit the deployment of nuclear weapons, unlike Lithuania’s.

He noted that in 2003, when Latvia was preparing to join NATO, each member state assured that it would have no restrictions on implementing NATO’s full collective security mechanism, including participation in the nuclear deterrence system.

“If the need arises and NATO makes such a collective decision, nuclear weapons will be deployed in Latvia,” Rinkēvičs stated.

At the same time, he emphasized that no specific negotiations regarding the deployment of nuclear weapons in Latvia are currently underway.
