The Meloni Government Has Broken The Record For The Longest Time In Power In Postwar Italy
Georgi Meloni

The current cabinet has surpassed Silvio Berlusconi's second government.

On Friday, the government of Giorgia Meloni marks 1,413 days in continuous power, becoming the longest-serving government in the history of the Italian Republic after Benito Mussolini, the Italian fascist dictator.

This was reported by Euractiv.

The current cabinet has thus surpassed the second government of Silvio Berlusconi, which ruled for 1,412 days.

Meloni’s party, “Brothers of Italy,” is turning this milestone into a victory celebration.

Thousands of supporters are expected in Bari, in southern Italy, where Meloni will speak at a rally from a stage overlooking the Adriatic Sea under the slogan: “The most stable government—a stronger Italy.”

Behind the celebrations and praise lies a truth: Meloni is no longer the political phenomenon who burst onto the political scene in October 2022.

The main question—given that general elections are scheduled for next year—is how long Meloni and the right-wing forces will remain dominant in Italian politics. She is still a long way from matching Berlusconi, who remained in power for a total of 3,340 days across all his terms.

“Brothers of Italy” remains, without a doubt, the largest single party, garnering about 26%, but according to several polls this summer, the overall lead of Meloni’s center-right coalition has narrowed compared to the consolidating center-left bloc.

The center-left, which is currently trying to unite around the “campo largo”—a broad coalition encompassing center-left and more left-wing forces—still lacks a clear leader.

The next election is scheduled for September 2027, but speculation is already mounting about an early vote in the spring.
