A Split Has Begun Within "Putin's Girlfriend's" Party In Germany

A number of lawmakers, including ministers, are leaving the political party.

An internal party conflict within the ranks of the left-wing populists of the BSW (Sari Wagenknecht Alliance) has intensified in the German state of Thuringia—ten lawmakers have decided to leave the party, including three state ministers.

This concerns ten members of the BSW faction in the Thuringian state parliament who intend to leave the party.

According to available information, among them are three state ministers responsible for finance, digital technology, and the environment. In addition, the BSW state leader Gernot Süsmuth has also stepped down from his post.

Earlier this week, three members had already left the parliamentary group and the party; now, with these new resignations, only 12 members remain in the BSW parliamentary group.

As parliamentary group leader Sigrid Hupach stated, despite the reduction in membership, the lawmakers will continue to serve in the state parliament for now and “remain loyal to the coalition.” Thuringia’s CDU Prime Minister Mario Voigt also confirmed that the coalition remains functional and will continue to operate.

The wave of resignations has only intensified the already simmering conflict between the Thuringian branch of the BSW and the party leadership at the federal level. Earlier, Sara Wagenknecht stated that the party would not stand in the way of the leader of the far-right “Alternative for Germany” in Saxony-Anhalt from assuming the post of state premier, a position for which he will likely be eligible following the local elections. In response, the head of the BSW’s Thuringian chapter, Katja Wolf, sharply criticized this position, calling it an unacceptable concession to far-right forces.

It is also noted that if the BSW wins seats in the Saxony-Anhalt parliament, it plans to work with “Alternative for Germany” to first and foremost push for the adoption of a resolution opposing German aid to Ukraine.
