The U.S. president named an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz.
Global markets’ dependence on the Strait of Hormuz may decrease thanks to new oil supply routes through the Middle East.
This was reported by Charter97.org, citing statement by U.S. President Donald Trump during a briefing in the Oval Office of the White House.
According to Trump, new pipelines and overland routes in the Middle East could gradually reduce global markets’ dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. In his view, the strategic importance of this waterway is no longer what it used to be.
“There are many alternatives to the Strait of Hormuz today. The Strait of Hormuz is no longer what it used to be,” Trump said.
He noted that new pipelines are being built in the region, providing additional options for transporting oil. In addition, according to the U.S. president, substantial volumes of oil are already being transported by truck through Syrian territory.
Trump linked the development of alternative routes to Iran’s stance. He stated that if Tehran does not change its approach, it may be left with the Strait of Hormuz, whose importance to global markets will be significantly reduced.
“Iran, if it doesn’t get smarter—and it really isn’t showing any signs of doing so, and I’m not sure they’re capable of it—will soon be left with the Strait of Hormuz, which won’t be very useful,” the White House chief noted.
During the briefing, the U.S. president also commented on the hostilities between the U.S. and Iran. He stated that he does not consider them a full-scale war.
“I call it a military conflict. For us, it’s a minor issue; it’s not a big deal,” Trump said.
