Princess Diana Was Named The Greatest Style Icon Of All Time

She received 32% of the votes in a survey commissioned by the British brand Cotton Traders.

Princess Diana has once again topped the list of the most influential style icons. Nearly 30 years after her death, she has surpassed Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Beyoncé, and other legendary women, proving that her influence on fashion remains as strong as ever.

According to the Daily Mirror, Diana received 32% of the votes in a survey of 2,000 people commissioned by the British brand Cotton Traders. It is particularly telling that she took first place not only in the overall ranking but also among Generation Z—people born after her death in 1997.

The reason for her popularity lies in the extraordinary versatility of her wardrobe. Diana looked equally at home in luxurious evening gowns, tailored suits, and casual athletic wear. She paired oversized sweatshirts with cycling shorts, wore baseball caps and sneakers, and could throw on classic blazers over completely casual outfits.

One of her signature moves was mixing and matching the seemingly mismatched. Romantic collars appeared in outfits with jeans and overalls, while a tailored blazer was paired with athletic wear. Today, such techniques have become commonplace, but in the 1980s, Diana was effectively one of the first to make this approach part of her own recognizable style.

However, survey participants did not name one of Diana’s looks as the most iconic outfit in history. First place went to Marilyn Monroe’s white dress from the movie *The Seven Year Itch*—15% of the votes. Diana’s famous black “revenge dress” came in second with 12%.

Interest in celebrity style remains high: 31% of respondents admitted that they had tried to replicate the look of their favorite icon at least once. At the same time, nearly nine out of ten respondents believe that stars from past generations dressed more stylishly than today’s celebrities.
