The Serbian Government Has Called On Vučić To Dissolve Parliament

To reduce social tension.

The Serbian government has asked President Aleksandar Vučić to dissolve parliament and set a date for early elections, according to Reuters. The president may dissolve parliament “upon a well-founded proposal from the government.”

“If we want to ease tensions in society, there is no better way than to turn to the people,” said Prime Minister Đuro Mačut. Vucic is expected to set a date for the parliamentary elections in the coming days. Under the constitution, the election campaign must last between 45 and 60 days. Earlier, the head of state promised that the elections would take place on October 18 or 25.

The next parliamentary elections were scheduled to take place in December 2027. President Vucic’s term is set to expire in the spring of that year. In July 2026, Aleksandar Vucic stated that he would step down early—the day after the date of the parliamentary elections is announced. On September 5, the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SPP) nominated Vucic as its candidate for prime minister.
