Bloomberg: Putin's Talks With Trump's Envoys Did Not Result In A Breakthrough

The dictator of the Russian Federation has decided to continue the war.

The first visit to Moscow in more than half a year by U.S. special envoys Steven Whitcoff and Jared Kushner—which had been in the works since spring and had been postponed for several months— proved unable to break the deadlock in Vladimir Putin’s position.

After meeting with Whitcoff and Kushner, Putin remains determined to continue the war, according to Bloomberg sources familiar with the situation. No breakthrough was achieved during the talks, which lasted more than three hours, the agency’s sources emphasized. According to them, Putin is determined to capture the entire Donetsk region and believes that the army will be able to accomplish this task within the next six months.

Russian President’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that Putin may hold a phone call with Donald Trump. He also did not rule out the resumption of trilateral talks between Russia, the U.S., and Ukraine, though he clarified that “it is still too early to discuss the location and exact timing.” Whitcoff himself, who traveled to Kyiv after Moscow to meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and national security advisers from the UK, France, and Germany, reported “substantial progress” following his meetings.

However, sources told the Financial Times earlier that officials in Kyiv also concluded after his visit that the war is unlikely to end before the coming winter. According to them, Donald Trump’s envoys brought “few new ideas” and merely attempted to revive previous proposals, as well as to narrow the differences between the positions of Kyiv and Moscow.

Whitcoff and Kushner’s diplomatic tour was preceded by an unexpected visit to Moscow by CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who, according to sources at The Washington Post, presented Russian intelligence leaders with a grim assessment of the Russian military’s situation on the battlefield and the state of the Russian economy. He also called for a resumption of negotiations, insisting that escalation would only worsen the situation and that a complete surrender of Donbas, as demanded by the Kremlin, “simply will not happen.”

But Putin is “not interested” in discussing such matters, according to political analyst Tatyana Stanovaya. “Putin is convinced that he is winning the war, and no matter how long it takes, he believes that at some point Ukraine will break,” she explains.

By all accounts, Putin is living in a “fictional” reality, as the military command systematically exaggerates its successes on the front lines due to a culture of lies deeply entrenched in the army, according to experts at the U.S. Institute for the Study of War. Since 2022, the Kremlin has pushed back the deadlines for capturing the Donetsk region 15 times, and not once has the army met them, the ISW writes. According to experts’ calculations, the army is currently advancing at a rate of 2.36 square kilometers per day in the Donetsk theater of operations, and at this rate, it will not be able to take control of the remaining 19% of the region until October 2032.
