Portnikov Said That Whitcoff And Kushner May Have Made Proposals To Moscow And Kyiv

A Ukrainian journalist linked the visit to the U.S. elections.

Steve Whitcoff and Jared Kushner could propose a ceasefire until the November U.S. elections so that Donald Trump could demonstrate the results of his peacemaking efforts to the American people.

This was discussed on the air by "Espresso" by Ukrainian journalist Vitaly Portnikov.

In his view, when assessing Whitcoff and Kushner’s negotiations with Moscow and Kyiv, it is important to consider not only the situation in Ukraine and Russia but also the approaching U.S. elections. Trump needs to demonstrate tangible results to American voters by November amid discontent over rising prices.

“Trump needs to show Americans something very substantial by November 2026—something that will, to some extent, reduce the level of discontent among people who see gasoline prices rising every day and, as a result, prices rising across the board. I don’t know to what extent ending Russia’s war against Ukraine could serve as an argument. But he may feel that this would reaffirm his reputation as a peacemaker,” Portnikov noted.

According to the journalist, the return of large volumes of Russian oil to the global market may also be important for Trump. Therefore, Portnikov suggests, Washington might be interested not even in a definitive end to the war, but in a temporary suspension of it ahead of the election.

“He might ask Putin not to end the war, but to suspend it until the election. That, too, could be a realistic idea: fight as much as you want afterward, but stop for now. Stop in September, and then in November, do whatever you want. Can you just sit quietly for two months? That could be the main idea,” the journalist suggested.

Portnikov does not rule out that this is precisely the option Whitcoff and Kushner might have discussed with both the Russian and Ukrainian sides. At the same time, he sees no reason to expect a real breakthrough from the current negotiation process.
