Zmitser Dashkevich, political prisoner

November 1, 2006 the leader of the Young Front was sentenced to a year and a half of imprisonment in a minimum-security colony. The young leader was charged with violation of a "political" article of the Criminal Code, Article 193 ("Activities on behalf of an unregistered organization"). Zmitser Dashkevich is serving a sentence in Shklou colony with a reinforced regime. He works in a forest plot sawing wood. His health deteriorated because of extreme conditions of work.

    Zmiter Dashkevich has been from the Shklou colony today. According to Zmiter, the news about his release came as a surprise for him. Allegedly, an order came out that a term of punishment (1.5 year) was reduced to 1 year, thus Zmiter served 4 months more than he was due, nn.by reports. It should be reminded that Zmiter Dashkevich was sentenced to 1.5 year of prison for participation in the unregistered organisation in November, 2006 (he was in a remand jail since September, 2006).

    Editor’s office of “Narodnaya Vola” received a letter from political prisoner Zmiter Dashkevich, the “Young Front” leader. The news-paper wanted to publish an interview with Zmiter Dashkevich. They even sent their questions to the colony. Though they didn’t hope for an answer, moreover such a detailed answer, they reached their gain, though Zmiter warned “sorry, if I have missed something, it wasn’t made specially.”

    A trial over political prisoner Zmitser Dashkevich was surprisingly quick. Judge Kashkina found Zmitser guilty of violation of the article 402 of the Criminal Code, and fined him 60 basic units (1 million 869 thousand rubles). Representatives of the OSCE mission were allowed to be present at the proceedings. Previously they sent a letter to Interior Minister Navumau and asked him to attend the trial. But even Dashkevich’s father, who had arrived to Shklou from Staryja Darogi, has been denied a permission to attend the hearings.

    The court session over the case of “Young front” leader Zmiter Dashkevich has been rescheduled for 9 November. As it became known for Charter’97 press center, according to the law, the trial is to begin after 5 days a defendant receives a document informing about place and date of a trial.

    A year ago Zmiter Dashkevich, one of the organization “Young Front” leader was convicted. 1 November 2006 the court found him guilty on the article 193-1 of the Criminal Code (activity on behalf of an unregistered organization) and sentenced him to 1.5 year of imprisonment. The trial was closed.

    Another criminal case on Zmitser Dashkevich, assistant head of the Malady Front (Young Front) organization, was passed to the public prosecutor’s office of the town of Shklou. Zmitser Dashkevich is accused of his refusal to testify against his friends from Malady Front. Zmitser is now passing his 1.5-year prison term for membership in a non-registered organization. Now he can get a new sentence which he will pass in the same prison.
