New party – Belarusian Christian Democracy – created in Belarus

The result of a congress of the Belarusian Christian Party, held in Minsk on February 28, was election of its four heads and adoption of program documents – a statute and a program of the new party.

In the results of open voting, Heorhy Dzmitruk, Vital Rymsheuski, Paval Sevyarynets, and Alyaksei Shein were elected co-chairmen of the party.

As Paval Sevyarynets told at the congress, an executive body of the party would be the National Council, consisted of 10 “significant vip-persons” and 10 regional founders of the BCD.

The congress was attended by 206 delegates out of 211 applicants for the congress. Delegate from Homel Kanstantsin Zhukouski wasn’t able to come because he is serving arrest for participation in the rally on the International Day of Native Language. Some of people were detained by militia on their way to Minsk, the authorities tried to intimidate the rest. Despite obstacles, the founding congress took place.

10 vip-persons, besides four BCD co-heads, include Zmitser Dashkevich, head of the international youth organization “Young Front” Zmitser Dashkevich; former political prisoner and head of the civil movement “Initiative” Andrei Kim; head of the organizing committee on creation of the “Young Belarus” movement Artur Finkevich; singer Andrei Melnikau; pastor Ernest Sabilo; executive secretary of the organizing committee on the BCD creation Dzyanis Sadouski.

The hall was decorated with symbols of the BCD – a Bethlehem Star against the background of the white-red-white flag and a slogan “Christian Principles, Belarusian Patriotism”. The delegates were chanting “Long Live Belarus! Live with God!” Poet Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu passed his poem “Flag”, which will probably become a hymn of the party.

“The aim of the BCD is looking for firm basis for the nation and the country. For this purpose we must invite tens of thousands of people, who believe in God and love Belarus, to take part in public activity and politics. It is very important for us to be a moral basis for changes. The BCD should be a party of morality. The BCD is not an opposition, it is an alternative. A main task for us is to show Belarus and the Belarusians how it is possible to live better if they aren’t afraid, don’t lie, don’t steal. If they believe and love. The BCD is a party of victory. We believe that Belarus will be free and will live according to principles of truth and justice,” co-head of the party Paval Sevyarynets said.

As it was said at the congress, the organizing committee of the party is going to apply for registration in the Ministry of Justice “In the nearest time”. According to the law, it is possible to do only within a month after holding of a founding congress. The Ministry of Justice must give an answer on registration on denial of registration within a month after the documents were filed.
