Out of former Communist bloc countries only Belarus has red star at its coat-of-arms

A red star is to disappear from the state coat-of-arms of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Thus, Belarus remains the only post-Socialist country where this symbol still exists, “European Belarus” website notes.

A proposal of the government of Macedonia is to be approved by the parliament in the next few days.

Most likely, the coat-of-arms is to be changed, as pro-governmental majority has the required three-thirds in the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia.

The Cabinet headed by Nikola Gruevski expects that the country would “have a rest” from its political past.

The current coat-of-arms with the sun, water and mountains was taken by Macedonia from Yugoslavia times. It was adopted in 1946 and is similar to symbols of other Socialist countries (out of all European countries, only Belarus still has such a coat of arms). Attempts top change the coat-of-arms continued since Macedonia’s independence proclaimed in 1991.

We remind that after the referendum of 1995, the Belarusian authorities replaced the historical coat-of-arms of Belarus, “Pahonya”, by a slightly altered Soviet symbols.
