The lawyer hopes that this proposal to file a petition to the CEC would become an example to be followed by other Belarusian citizens.

The lawyer of the human rights organization “Belarusian Helsinki Committee” Harry Pahanyajla is preparing a petition to the Central Election Commission with a demand to deny registration to the initiative group for nomination Alyaksandr Lukashenka as a candidate for presidency.

In an interview to Radio Svaboda Harry Pahanyajla explained his idea in the following way:

“A referendum initiated by him on October 17, 2004, was unconstitutional and illegal. As a result of it, power was usurped in Belarus; one man power lasts for an indefinite term, and it was in fact change of the constitutional system in the country. Such changes of the current Constitution and laws cannot be accepted as legitimate. All bodies of power in Belarus and responsible executives must be guided by these positions and preserve the state constitutional order,” Harry Pahanyajla says.
