'There's Money For Officials' Travelling, But Not For Snow Clearing'

A Belarusian asked a pressing question to the authorities.

The sudden but short-lived arrival of winter in Belarus has revealed problems in the housing and utilities sector.

On Monday, a woman was killed by snow falling from the roof in Vitsebsk. On December 19, two girls and a young woman suffered from falling ice from the roofs in Homel.

A reader of Charter97.org asked a sharp question to the officials:

- Belarusian chat rooms write that the roads and streets are not only not cleared of snow, but also not sprinkled with sand or salt.

There is money for officials' travel, money for building a new military camp, but there is no money to pay for snow removal. People die of bad weather on the way home. Obviously, not everyone in Belarus will live to see the spring.
