The US State Department confirmed the statement of the US President.
If Ukraine becomes a NATO member state, this means that NATO will enter direct conflict with Russia. This would entail a "huge escalation" that the US and NATO states do not want.
So on the air of Radio NV, the official representative of the US State Department, Andrea Kalan, commented on the statement of US President Joe Biden about Ukraine's accession to NATO.
“We all intend for Ukraine to become a member of NATO. This is clear. President Biden said yesterday after a meeting with President Zelensky that we begin this process as soon as the war ends,” Kalan said, noting that Ukraine must implement a number of reforms.
“I can just confirm what was said… President Biden said that when the war ends, then Ukraine will become a NATO member state. I don't know how to be more clear on this issue," Kalan said.
At the same time, she noted that only Ukraine will decide what the end of this war will look like.
“I want to say that it is not for the United States to decide what the end of the war should look like, but for Ukraine. And we will support Ukraine in this,” she said.
Biden's statement on Ukraine's accession to NATO
On July 12, 2023, during a meeting with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Joe Biden said that there is no question of “whether they want to see Ukraine in NATO”.
The head of the White House also expressed admiration for the resilience of the Ukrainians and stressed that Ukraine is an example for the whole world, and the United States is doing everything to provide Ukraine with everything necessary to protect itself from Russian aggression as soon as possible.
Biden stressed that support for Ukraine will not weaken, and Russian President Vladimir Putin's refusal to diplomatically end the war by withdrawing Russian invader troops from Ukraine is wrong.
“We will not back down. I mean that our commitment to Ukraine will not weaken. We will be on the side of freedom today, tomorrow and for as long as it takes. We want this war to end on fair terms. On terms that will adhere to the basic principles of the UN Charter,” Biden stressed.
