Largest Russian Spy Network In History Exposed In Poland

The agents planned to blow up trains with weapons and aid for Ukraine.

The Russian intelligence network operating in Poland, exposed by the prosecutor's office and the Internal Security Agency, planned to blow up trains with weapons and humanitarian aid for Ukraine. Gazeta Polska wrote about this on July 19.

Poland's intelligence services have eliminated the largest Russian intelligence network in the history of the country, the publication says. In total, from March to July of this year, 15 people were detained on charges of spying for Russian military intelligence. They face up to 10 years in prison.

Citizens of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine participated in the network. The publication writes that they received tasks for remote execution directly from Moscow, and after completing them they received a reward in cryptocurrency (mainly in bitcoins), which they then exchanged for cash.

Members of the spy network, ordered by the Russians, had to not only collect information, photograph the specified military and civilian facilities and spread anti-Ukrainian and anti-NATO sentiments, but also prepare sabotage actions.

According to the publication, in 66 volumes of the case there are materials indicating, among other things, that it was planned to blow up trains with weapons and vehicles with humanitarian aid for Ukraine. For this reason, the first arrests were at that time, and not at any other time, since the risk of attacks was too great to continue to monitor the activities of the network, a source familiar with the investigation said.

The publication's findings show that the spy network was created in early 2023, less than a year after Russia's attack on Ukraine.
