Today, July 8, Edgars Rinkevics took the oath in the Saeima of Latvia and came to power as the President of the country. In his swearing-in speech, he mentioned Russia's war against Ukraine, according to ERR.
“Imperial Russia and the Lukashenka regime threaten the region, Europe and the whole world. The foreign policy of our country does not and will not have time for mistakes. We will continue to need to act quickly, decisively and wisely,” said President Rinkēvičs.
He promised that Latvia's foreign and security policy would remain unchanged. In particular, the country will continue to stand for strong and effective NATO and the EU, as well as uphold an international order based on law and close cooperation with friends and allies.
In addition, President Rinkēvičs stated that Latvia will continue to support the Ukrainian people in their struggle for freedom until the final victory of Ukraine.
“We will continue to fight Russian imperialism and its evil global ideology,” he said.
Earlier, the presidents of Lithuania, Poland and Latvia warned NATO about the threat from Belarus.
