Belarusian journalist Andrzej Poczobut, sentenced to eight years, was awarded the 75th Anniversary Jan Karski Medal on September 10. His brother Stanislau received the award for the political prisoner in Lublin, writes baj.by with reference to Polish Radio.
During the ceremony, Stanislau Poczobut said that he would like his brother to personally receive this medal:
“I don’t feel worthy of receiving this medal. Strange thoughts are always spinning in my head that it would be better if Andrzej took it. I won’t do it as well as him,” Stanislau Pochobut said emotionally. “Hope always dies last. We believe that the walls will crumble and everyone will come out in the end.” There are now more than 1,500 recognized political prisoners in Belarus and almost the same number of unrecognized who did not ask for help and did not say why they are in prison,” Stanislau said.
Recall that the Jan Karski Society decided to award Andrzej Poczobut to express solidarity with the imprisoned journalist. The decision to award him should be regarded as a reaction to the pressure that Andrzej experiences in the Navapolatsk prison.
