Black Rain Fell In The Moscow Region Following An Attack On An Oil Refinery

The precipitation was accompanied by the smell of burning.

Residents of the Zheleznodorozhny neighborhood in Balashikha, near Moscow, reported in city chat groups and on social media that a dark film had appeared on their cars, windowsills, and clothing after the recent rain, according to the Telegram channel “Ostorozhno, Moskva”.

Citing eyewitnesses, the channel reports that the precipitation was accompanied by a smell of burning, and that traces visually resembling petroleum products remained on surfaces.

It was raining, with winds blowing at about 16 km/h, which could carry smoke and combustion products in a northeasterly direction, where Balashikha is located.

The Moscow Department of Natural Resources and Mosekomonitoring stated that no deterioration in air quality was recorded in Moscow or the Moscow Region.

The cause may have been a fire at the Moscow oil refinery. On the morning of June 18, Ukrainian drones attacked the refinery for the second time this week. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported the attack. “Measures are being taken to address the consequences,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.

A fire also broke out on the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) on the grounds of the “Sadovod” and “Belaya Dacha” shopping complexes, and a house in Kotelniki, a suburb of Moscow, was hit.

In total, during the raid—which lasted from 4:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.—air defense forces shot down 137 Ukrainian drones as they approached Moscow and directly over the city, Sobyanin specified.
