Without the involvement of the far right.
The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, the Union of Democrats “For the Sake of Lithuania,” and the “Union of Farmers and Greens of Lithuania” signed a new coalition agreement on Thursday after the far-right party “Zarya Neman” was excluded from the previous coalition.
This was reported by LRT.
The revamped coalition will hold 75 seats in the 141-seat Seimas, and the leader of the Social Democrats, Mindaugas Sinkevičius, plans to head the government.
The “For Lithuania” Democratic Union, which was invited to join the coalition, will be responsible for the ministries of agriculture, energy, and health in the new cabinet. The Farmers and Greens Union retains control over the ministries of economy, innovation, and justice. The remaining portfolios will go to the Social Democrats, including the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which are important for Ukraine.
The names of those who will take up ministerial posts have not yet been disclosed. According to Sinkevičius, clarity regarding the ministers is expected after June 24.
For Lithuania, this is already the third governing coalition in a year and a half. The previous government, which will officially announce its resignation next week, collapsed after deciding to end its cooperation with the far-right “Star of Neman” and begin negotiations with the “For Lithuania” Democratic Union.
