The birth rate in the country is lower than during the Second World War.
"Lukashenka's call not to be afraid to have children. This comes from all propaganda sources and sounds ridiculous! What’s going on in a ‘quiet and calm Belarus’ that people have become afraid to live, go to events, read websites, give birth and go abroad (if anyone else has such an opportunity)?" asks Volha from the Vitebsk Region, a reader of the Charter97.org.
“According to statistics, the birth rate in Belarus is lower than during the Second World War. How can you decide to get pregnant today, when punishers can burst in on you every minute, put you down in front of your children, handcuff you and lock you in a damp dungeon for many years?
Therefore, people can’t afford such a luxury as a baby child nowadays. After all, having a child is followed by responsibilities and obligations.
As for our town, it’s felt perfectly well that there are fewer children. Sunny days have come, and moms with strollers in the sandbox can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Well, when you meet friends, almost everyone complains that they have not seen their grandchildren for a long time, since the children had to evacuate from the ‘island of stability’, which we call the "island of idiocy" among close people.
I am convinced that the birth rate will not be raised by requests, petitions, or even the family capital of the moustachioed dictator. Only freedom and confidence in the present day will work. When people feel safe –they will return from forced emigration, then they will want to enjoy raising children and other simple things.”
