NATO Secretary General Promises Ukraine Air Defense Systems And Membership In Alliance
JENS STOLTENBERG

Kyiv has a chance to defeat the Russian Federation.

The North Atlantic Alliance is working on supplying air defense systems to Kyiv and hopes for Ukraine to join NATO, said the organization’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

“But Ukraine needs to become compatible with NATO armies as soon as possible. In the future, Ukraine will become a member of NATO. This path to membership is inevitable,” UNIAN quotes him as saying.

According to him, NATO is working to deliver a large number of air defense systems to Kyiv, since Ukraine has a chance to win.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, at a joint press conference with Stoltenberg, said that the seizure of the initiative at the front and a possible offensive by the Ukrainian Armed Forces depend on timely supplies of weapons and international financial assistance to Ukraine.

“Today I don’t see anything positive in this regard yet. There are supplies. They went little by little. This process must be accelerated,” the head of state added.

Earlier, Zelensky said that Kyiv and Washington are negotiating the volume of assistance for the next ten years as part of the “strongest” bilateral security agreement.

Ukraine has been negotiating with the United States to provide security guarantees since August 2023. According to The Washington Post, the document could include support for short-term military operations, the creation of future Ukrainian forces “that can deter Russian aggression,” the formation of protective “bubbles” around Ukrainian cities and the restoration of key economic sectors and exports.

At the NATO summit in July 2023, the G7 countries signed a declaration providing Ukraine with security guarantees. According to the document, each country that supported this initiative must negotiate with the Ukrainian side to determine specific long-term obligations.

After this, bilateral agreements on security guarantees with Ukraine were signed by Great Britain, Germany, France, Denmark, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland and Latvia. Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmygal stated that Kyiv hopes to sign similar agreements with more than 30 states.
