Moscow was caught off guard.
Last week, on August 6, Russians began to complain about the breakthrough of the Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region.
The occupiers claimed that the border was allegedly crossed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The official Ukrainian government is silent, but Western media are convinced that this operation “has President Zelensky’s fingerprints everywhere.”
According to The Times, the military actions in the Kursk region came as a surprise both to the aggressor Russia and to Western leaders, in particular the United States. At first, it looked like another demonstration of the loud military bravado of Putin’s militias, but two days later there was an assumption that Kyiv could be trying to launch a strategic counterattack against the Russian Federation.
“It was a secret in Kyiv for many months that the president was pressuring his military leadership to launch a summer offensive,” the article reads.
Given the problems with resources and personnel, they have been hesitant, but President Zelensky has tried to change the idea that Ukraine is losing the war.
“The military leadership is prepared to risk valuable soldiers and equipment to achieve something in this direction,” The Times suggests.
