Bangladesh PM Flees Country
SHEIKH HASINA

Her whereabouts are still unknown.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country amid mass protests that have left hundreds dead.

Her whereabouts are still unknown, the BBC reports.

Thousands of people stormed Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister's residence, on Monday.

It is unclear who is in charge. The BBC correspondent reports that the army chief is talking to political party leaders and plans to hold a press conference soon.

At least 90 people were killed on Sunday in clashes between police and protesters demanding Sheikh Hasina's resignation.

Among the dead were 13 police officers. They were killed in an attack on a police station in the city of Sirajganj, 100 km north of the capital Dhaka.

Student protests demanding the end of the civil service quota system began in July. More than 280 people have died since then.

In Dhaka, police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters, and the Prime Minister ordered mobile internet to be shut down in the country.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on the Bangladeshi authorities to stop the violence.

He also expressed concern about a mass march planned in Dhaka on Monday, warning of the risk of further escalation.

“The government must stop persecuting those who are peacefully participating in the protest movement, immediately release those detained, restore full internet access and create conditions for constructive dialogue,” he said.
