US Prepares Ultimatum To Chinese Airlines

They are given two days to comply with the Department of Transportation's conditions.

The US Department of Transportation intends to ban Chinese airlines from using Russian airspace when flying to or from the United States.

This is reported by Reuters.

According to the agency, US airlines are dissatisfied with the current situation. They were banned from flying over Russia in 2022, while Chinese carriers continue to use the route.

According to a draft document prepared by the US Department of Transportation, this "imbalance has become a significant competitive factor."

The Transportation Department also said it is proposing to ban overflights over China "to equalize competitive disparities between U.S. and Chinese carriers," saying the current situation "is unfair and has resulted in significant adverse competitive effects on U.S. carriers."

Reuters sources note that the Transportation Ministry is giving Chinese carriers two days to respond to the proposed decree and said a final ban could take effect as early as November.

Some U.S. airlines have previously told the Trump administration that direct flights from the U.S. East Coast to China are not economically feasible due to the additional costs associated with not being able to fly over Russia.

In some cases, carriers even have to leave some seats vacant and reduce cargo weight due to the increased range.
