A Powerful Earthquake Struck Off The Coast Of The Philippines

There's a tsunami threat.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 on the Richter scale struck near the southeastern coast of the Philippines. A tsunami threat has been declared in the region.

According to CNN.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the tremors were recorded off the east coast of the island of Mindanao, about 123 kilometers from the island's capital Davao City, at a depth of 58.1 kilometers.

Phivolcs said the magnitude of the tremors was 7.6. There were no reports of damage.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that "a devastating tsunami with life-threatening waves is expected" and urged residents of coastal areas in the eastern and southern regions of the Philippines to evacuate.

The US Tsunami Warning System reported that wave heights could reach 1-3 meters in some parts of the Philippine coast.

On the coasts of Indonesia and the island nation of Palau are expected waves from 30 centimeters to 1 meter high.

The Philippines is located along the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire - an arc of about 40,000 kilometers, formed by a system of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean, where more than half of all the volcanoes of the planet and regularly occur powerful earthquakes.
