Two Years Without News Of Mikalai Statkevich
Mikalai Statkevich

What is happening to the leader of the Belarusian opposition?

Today marks two years since there was no news of the leader of the Belarusian opposition, political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich.

Mikalai Statkevich was sentenced to 14 years in prison, he was accused of "organizing mass riots" (Art. 293 of the Criminal Code of Belarus).

Mikalai Statkevich is kept in prison in the most severe conditions: the politician is kept in solitary confinement in hazardous conditions. It became known that in prison, Mikalai Statkevich had twice suffered COVID-19.

Natallia Radzina, the Editor-in-Chief of the Charter97.org website, demanded that the Belarusian authorities refute the information received from several sources about the possible death of Mikalai Statkevich in prison.

"Show us Mikalai Statkevich, if he is alive, show him to his closest and dearest person — Maryna Adamovich. Allow them a meet or at least a video call!

Otherwise, your silence will mean that the sources are right and the death of another political prisoner is on the conscience of Lukashenka and his punishers," Natallia Radzina said.

--- Some European politicians also joined the "Show Statkevich" campaign.

Recall that the deputy of the European Parliament from Lithuania, Petras Auštrevičius, nominated the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Mikalai Statkevich, for the Nobel Peace Prize.

"Mikalai Statkevich is a long-time leader of the Belarusian democratic forces (presidential candidate in 2010), who continues to fight for a free and democratic Belarus, despite personal risk and life-threatening imprisonment. Mikalai is a symbol of Lukashenko's political resistance and an inspirer of the struggle for the democratic future of Belarus.

We must fight for the lives of political prisoners, the nomination of Mikalai Statkevich for the Nobel Prize is one of the ways to emphasize his situation and the situation in Belarus as a whole," the Lithuanian politician told Charter97.org.
