A lawsuit has been filed against the U.S. president's son-in-law.

The American civil rights organization “Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington” (CREW) has filed a lawsuit against the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, demanding that his son-in-law Jared Kushner be barred from serving as a diplomatic envoy, according to NBC News.

The lawsuit alleges that Kushner effectively wields broad government powers, even though he has not been confirmed by the Senate and has not filed a public financial disclosure statement. The organization is demanding that he be removed from office or compelled to disclose his financial information.

Kushner is involved in negotiations regarding several international conflicts, including Russia’s war against Ukraine, Israel’s war against Hamas, and the U.S.’s conflict with Iran. At the same time, he heads the investment firm Affinity Partners, which manages more than $6 billion in assets.

According to the lawsuit, approximately 99% of these funds belong to foreign investors, including the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. The company also invests abroad, including in Israel. CREW believes that this combination of diplomatic authority and private financial interests creates a serious risk of a conflict of interest.

“He represents the United States in the most high-profile global conflicts and conducts direct negotiations with foreign leaders,” the lawsuit states.

Kushner’s attorney Chad Misell called the allegations baseless. According to him, government and independent ethics experts have reviewed Kushner’s working conditions and confirmed their compliance with current requirements. He also emphasized that the president’s son-in-law does not receive a salary and covers his own expenses.

The White House rejected the allegations, calling Kushner an experienced negotiator. Administration officials stated that the use of personal diplomatic envoys is a long-standing presidential practice.

The legal proceedings may raise questions about the limits of the authority of the president’s unofficial representatives and the extent to which their financial interests must be disclosed.
