People Online Have Noticed Putin's Strange Gestures And Behavior

He had already struck a similar pose at meetings in 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is back to his old ways and once again surprised everyone with his gestures and behavior during a joint online conference. The Russian dictator has been spotted in a similar position before: during meetings, he would cling to the edge of the tabletop or a corner of the table with his fingers, according to “Telegraf”.

In the published footage, Putin is also seen holding tightly onto the table during his speech at the plenary session of the “Business Russia” forum-congress.

Social media users and commentators tried to figure out why he chose that pose and what his gestures might mean.

Among the theories were suggestions that he was trying to hide a tremor in his hands and that he might be afraid.

One of the most notable incidents occurred on April 21, 2022, during a meeting with Russia’s then-Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. They were discussing Mariupol. On social media, however, people were discussing Putin’s posture: he was sitting with his hands clenched on the table. His hands looked swollen.

Similar incidents occurred subsequently. On August 25, 2022, Putin sat in this posture during a meeting with the head of the Federal Tax Service Danil Egorov, and on August 26—with the CEO of Aeroflot Sergey Aleksandrovsky.

In both instances, the Kremlin leader was seated in a chair and holding onto the corner of the table with his right hand. During his April conversation with Shoigu, he also hunched over and tucked his head into his shoulders. Repeating this posture at various meetings fueled speculation about Putin’s physical condition.

After the meeting with Shoigu, political expert Valery Solovey suggested that Putin was trying to hide a tremor in this way.

FREEДОМ offered another explanation: psychologists linked this behavior to fear. This version was also supported by footage of the conversation with Shoigu: in the footage, Putin was seen either slumping into his chair or trying to hold on to the table as tightly as possible.
