A serious incident involving a fire at one of Canada’s largest military bases in the province of Alberta resulted in deaths and injuries, according to Defense Minister David McGinty, as reported by ERR.
“It is with deep regret that I must report that there have been fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident at the Canadian military base in Wainwright,” McGinty told reporters, as quoted by Reuters.
He did not specify how many people were killed or injured, nor did he explain the cause of the tragic incident at the base, located in the central-eastern part of the province, approximately 210 km east of Edmonton.
According to the minister, the fire was still burning on the evening of October 17. “I can’t recall any similar incidents in recent times,” he added.
Warren Thirsk , an emergency room physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, told a reporter from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) that a Code Orange —an emergency protocol activated during major incidents or other large-scale crises. According to the doctor, this was necessary to cope with the large number of patients being brought to the city’s hospitals.
“This is a disaster. A disaster of this magnitude happens once every 15 to 25 years,” the doctor said.
