The U.S. president will not be able to go against Congress and the public.

Pressure from the U.S. Congress and the public could force U.S. President Donald Trump to abandon concessions to the Kremlin and step up support for Ukraine. In recent weeks, Washington has eased sanctions pressure on Russia, criticized Kyiv, and, reportedly, imposed restrictions on the use of U.S. technology for Ukraine’s defense, writes Atlantic Council.

Trump announced a deal with Putin on diesel fuel supplies, and then demanded that Ukraine stop striking Russian oil refineries. Meanwhile, Moscow continued to attack Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Against this backdrop, problems arose with Ukraine’s access to the U.S. satellite systems Starlink and Starshield. The White House denied that it had ordered restrictions on their use, but the situation drew criticism in the U.S. representatives from both parties spoke out against a rapprochement with the Kremlin, and members of Congress began calling for an investigation into the administration’s policies.

Talks between U.S. Special Envoy Steve Whitcoff and Ukrainian and European leaders, followed by talks with Putin, led to discussions about resuming trilateral talks in November. However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow is ready to discuss Washington’s proposals but does not intend to make political concessions.

“This approach guarantees the failure of Trump’s goal—to achieve a stable peace that ensures Ukraine’s sovereignty and security,” writes the Atlantic Council.
Congress will seek to reverse concessions to Moscow and will investigate the administration’s handling of the war.
