Rising fuel and food prices could lead to renewed support for Ukraine.
The economic consequences of a U.S.-Iran war could weaken the Republicans’ position in the November 2026 midterm congressional elections. Rising fuel and food prices are reminiscent of the situation in 1966, when opponents of President Lyndon Johnson used the costs of the Vietnam War and inflation to strengthen their position, writes Foreign Policy.
Historian and columnist Julian E. Zelizer notes that in 1966, Republicans criticized the Johnson administration for the rising budget deficit and cost of living. As a result, the party gained 47 additional seats in the House of Representatives and three seats in the Senate, although the Democrats retained their majorities in both chambers.
The rising cost of everyday goods—meat, transportation, and medical services—proved particularly painful for the White House. In October 1966, American families boycotted supermarkets in protest against rising prices. Republican campaign flyers featured the slogan “Progress is leading to the devaluation of the dollar.”
In 2026, the Democrats may employ a similar strategy. Military action against Iran has destabilized global oil and trade markets, which has impacted American consumers’ spending. At the same time, U.S. President Donald Trump, who had promised not to drag the country into protracted wars, found himself embroiled in a conflict whose economic consequences voters are now feeling.
Zelizer notes that voters may be concerned not so much with the president’s foreign policy strategy as with its impact on their household budgets. Gas prices at the pump and food prices in stores could prove to be a more compelling argument for Democrats than debates over international policy.
“Americans from both political camps are paying the price for this,” the historian concludes.
If the Democratic Party wins the U.S. congressional midterm elections on November 3, Washington’s foreign policy could change dramatically, including with regard to Ukraine.
