"We've Been Waiting For You": How Venezuelans Welcomed María Machado

The leader of the Venezuelan opposition and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado returned to her homeland after nearly a year in exile. “I’m here. With you,” she wrote on Sunday, October 25, on the social media platform X.

She was greeted by thousands of supporters chanting “Freedom!”

Her ally and former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia confirmed the 59-year-old politician’s return. “Today is a very important day for Venezuelans,” he said.

Earlier, on October 22, thousands of protesters in Venezuela demanded Machado’s return. In Caracas, demonstrators took to the streets carrying signs demanding that elections be held. Another similar protest took place in the western state of Táchira, on the border with Colombia.
