Far-right Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, following his defeat in the Brazilian presidential election, fled the country and has already arrived in the United States. He and his family will be issued visas in the future.

This was reported by The Guardian, the Associated Press, and CNN Brazil.

A report on the Metropoles website, citing sources close to the politician’s family, stated that he was heading to the U.S.

“The plane is in flight,” the article stated, but did not specify where it had departed from.

Meanwhile, Bolsonaro’s allies told the publication that he would arrive in Florida on Tuesday afternoon and plans to seek political asylum.

“The administration of (U.S. President—Ed.) Donald Trump has been informed,” the website added.

Allies also confirmed to the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo that the politician is heading to the U.S., stating that the escape plan was “organized and carried out by a lawyer close to the Bolsonaro clan.”

Meanwhile, CNN Brazil reports that Bolsonaro fled to the U.S. with his wife and two daughters early Tuesday morning. According to sources connected to the U.S. government, they have already arrived in the United States.

For his part, a high-ranking U.S. State Department official told the Associated Press that Flávio Bolsonaro and his family will be granted visas.

Other important details of the escape

Media outlets note that Bolsonaro, who enjoyed the tacit support of U.S. President Donald Trump, was under investigation on charges of corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion in Brazil, and had been ordered to surrender his passport.

However, the politician has not been seen since Monday, and he missed the deadline for surrendering his passport, which was set for Tuesday morning. This, in turn, fueled rumors that he might flee Brazil following his defeat in Sunday’s election.

The Brazilian newspaper O Globo reported that during a meeting with friends and lawyers on Monday, the defeated candidate appeared “obsessed and made it clear that he feared arrest.”

Media outlets also report that Flávio essentially followed in the footsteps of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who left for the U.S. two months after losing the presidential election to Luís Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022.

Elections in Brazil

As a reminder, the second round of the presidential election took place in Brazil on Sunday, October 25. According to the results, the incumbent head of state, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, emerged victorious.

With 99% of the votes counted, it was already clear that Lula had secured 51.75% of the vote, while Bolsonaro had 48.25%. It should be noted that Lula is currently 80 years old, and this will be his fourth term as president.
