Estonia Is Deploying Troops To The Border With Russia

The country is preparing for provocations.

Estonia is relocating a key brigade from the town of Tapa to Jõhvi, located 50 kilometers from the Russian border, as part of its “active defense” strategy. The country is thus preparing for a possible attack by Russia, Estonian officials told the publication Financial Times.

According to officials, Estonia is constantly moving troops closer to the border with Russia and purchasing weapons capable of striking deep into Russian territory. The country, located on NATO’s front line, is preparing for possible aggression by Moscow beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Estonian intelligence and the military do not believe that Russia will launch a full-scale war against NATO—at least not in the next two years—but they are convinced that Moscow could unleash a military conflict with the Baltic states. Most likely, this will be Estonia, which does not have its own air force but is shifting to a strategy of “active defense.”

“We must start at the border and win right from the first battles,” said Colonel Tarmo Kundla, commander of the Estonian 1st Brigade, the country’s main combat force.

As part of the new strategy, his unit will permanently relocate from Tapa to Jõhvi, 50 km from the Russian border, where large new facilities are currently being built to house the soldiers.
