In that case, he would be the first African American to hold that position.

Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is likely to become the next Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives following the Democratic Party’s victory in the midterm elections held on November 3, according to CNN.

Jeffries, 56, could become the first African American to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives, leading a larger caucus during the next session than either of his two predecessors.

During his address to voters on November 3, Jeffries stated that now is not the time for partisan disputes, but rather a time for patriotism.

“Today marks the beginning of America’s great revival… We will work tirelessly to bring about the fundamental changes you deserve,” he told a jubilant crowd at a vote-counting event, according to the AP.

The publication notes that Jeffries has every chance of making history as the first Black Speaker of the House if Democrats gain control of the House and his colleagues elect him to the position.

Since October 2023, the Speaker of the House of Representatives has been Republican Mike Johnson.

According to AP projections, the Democratic Party is leading in the U.S. midterm congressional elections. According to preliminary data, Democrats are set to win at least 52 of the 100 seats in the Senate, and in the House of Representatives, they are also close to a majority of 218 seats, currently holding 204 seats to the Republicans’ 123; vote counting is still underway.
