The midterm elections revealed deep dissatisfaction among voters.
The Democrats won the U.S. Senate election and moved closer a majority in the House of Representatives. This event ushered in a new era of congressional resistance to President Donald Trump, writes the Associated Press
The midterm elections revealed deep voter dissatisfaction with high prices, the war in Iran, and concerns about government corruption.
Even Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine, a battle-hardened veteran of tough elections, lost to Democrat Troy Jackson.
The nationwide results dealt a serious blow to Trump: he held rallies almost every day during the last month in an attempt to rally his supporters, but was unable to prevent the rout.
The Democrats made it clear that they would use their positions in Congress to launch a series of investigations into high-ranking members of Trump’s administration during the final two years of his presidency and to scrutinize more closely how he enriches his family. At celebratory events on Tuesday evening, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called the outcome a “generational redrawing of the Senate map.” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that “the American people are demanding transformative change.”
Trump immediately tried to shift the blame for his party’s defeat: even before polls closed on the West Coast, he wrote on social media that he wasn’t on the ballot, even though for several weeks he himself had asked voters to act as if he were. He promised to veto laws passed under Democratic control and shared an image of a red baseball cap with the word “veto” on it, modeled after his signature “Make America Great Again” merchandise.
In a late-night phone interview with Fox News, Trump said he does not consider this election a personal defeat. According to him, voters “didn’t like the candidates.”
Democrats were preparing for the possibility that Trump would again try to undermine the results in the event of their victory. However, on Fox, he stated that he would accept the election results. Although the president has proven capable of quelling attempts to limit his power, Democrats will seek to reshape the remainder of his term. Among the possible targets of investigations are Defense Secretary Pete Hegset and tech mogul Elon Musk, a former key adviser to Trump.
