The tankers abruptly changed course.
Two of the three oil tankers carrying Russian fuel that were headed for the U.S. changed course, jeopardizing a previously concluded diesel agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
This was reported by Financial Times.
According to the FT, the Russian tanker “Talisman” and the “Leruo”—owned by a Hong Kong company and flying the Sierra Leone flag—no longer list the U.S. Atlantic coast as their destination.
As of November 2, the “Leruo” changed course for Brazil, while the “Talisman” headed into the Mediterranean Sea and is currently off the coast of Algeria, transmitting the signal “for orders” (meaning “awaiting orders”).
This means that the cargo does not yet have a confirmed buyer or port of destination. Both tankers are subject to European Union sanctions.
A third tanker, the “Agioi Fanendes,” owned by the Greek shipping company Eastern Mediterranean Maritime, continues en route to the United States but is transmitting the signal “for orders.”
“The tanker is expected to arrive in New York this weekend. However, given the obvious caution among American buyers due to regulatory, legislative, and sanctions risks, it would not be surprising if this tanker also changes course, abandoning its westward journey to the U.S.," noted Matt Smith, an analyst at Kpler.
Meanwhile, the tanker “Beast,” which is subject to sanctions and owned by companies based in the Seychelles, loaded its cargo at the Russian port of Primorsk on October 27 and continues to head for the U.S. Atlantic coast.
