The Democrats now hold more power than at any time in the 21st century.

The Democrats’ victory in the U.S. midterm elections not only gave the party control of Congress but also brought it sweeping success at the state level. The Democrats gained 258 additional seats in state legislatures, won 11 state legislative chambers from the Republicans, and stripped them of their qualified majorities in ten states. This could lead to significant changes in local politics and affect the lives of millions of Americans, writes The Guardian (translation by Charter97.org).

For the first time in 60 years, Democrats gained full control of Arizona’s government, regained a majority in Pennsylvania for the first time since the 1990s, and in Wisconsin—for the first time since their 2010 defeat. In Michigan and Minnesota, they also regained full control of the legislative and executive branches. In Texas, the party won a majority in the state House of Representatives for the first time since 2002.

“This was the most significant night for state legislatures since the Republican wave of 2010,” said Mandara Meyers of the States Project, an organization that supports Democratic candidates.

These new positions will allow Democrats to push for an increase in the minimum wage, an expansion of Medicaid, and free school meals.

The battle over redistricting is taking on particular significance. In Wisconsin, a new Democratic caucus is already considering changing the district boundaries, which currently give Republicans an advantage.

“Democrats now have more power in the states than at any time in the 21st century,” Myers said. According to projections, about 76% of the U.S. population will live in states with Democratic governors.
