The Democrats Have Gained An Important Advantage

Congress could block Trump's attempts to cut off aid to Ukraine.

The Democrats’ victory in the U.S. midterm elections opens the door to resuming U.S. military and economic aid to Ukraine, as well as to strengthening oversight of U.S. President Donald Trump’s policy toward Russia. The new majority in Congress will be able to push for funding for Kyiv and investigate the White House’s decisions to ease sanctions against Moscow, writes France24.

Democrats will be able to include packages of military and financial aid to Ukraine in legislative initiatives. However, overcoming a presidential veto will require a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress.

“The new Congress will effectively be able to say: we are not going to completely abandon Ukraine,” said Carrie Lee, a senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund.

Syracuse University professor Brian Taylor also expects Democrats to try to restore U.S. military and economic support for Kyiv. “For the past two years, Europeans have borne the full brunt of this burden,” he noted.
In addition, lawmakers may review the Trump administration’s decision to lift sanctions that had allowed Russia to sell diesel fuel on global markets.

However, a Democratic victory does not guarantee a rapid change in Washington’s policy. Trump continues to shape U.S. foreign policy, and the new Congress will not take office until January.

Experts also doubt that the war will end anytime soon. Putin is not interested in negotiations, hoping to secure better terms after a new offensive. Kyiv, too, sees no need to agree to unfavorable terms.
