He was given the call sign Sher Khan, and they want to send him to the front lines.

Ashish Singh , an Indian citizen who came to Belarus to work, was fraudulently recruited into the Russian army. He was given the call sign Sher Khan and is being prepared to be sent to fight in the war against Ukraine. The foreigner’s concerned relatives are trying to bring him home through diplomatic channels, according to The Times of India.

The man found a job in Belarus through an agent and left India on June 8, 2026. According to his relatives, Ashish initially worked on a farm in one of Belarus’s regions.

“The family claimed that he was not paid the promised salary, after which he moved to a construction site and then relocated to Minsk in search of better opportunities,” reports The Times of India.

In the Belarusian capital, Ashish was offered a job in Russia. According to his relatives, he was tricked into “signing documents related to military service and was transported to a Russian training center.” There, he was given the call sign Sher Khan and warned that he might soon be sent to the front lines.

The Indian Embassy in Moscow has appealed to the Russian Ministry of Defense demanding the release of Ashish Singh, reports The Times of India.

Earlier, it was reported that the Kyrgyz Embassy in Moscow had sent a note to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs calling for the return of one of its citizens, who had been recruited into the Russian army “as a result of fraudulent actions by unidentified individuals.” He, too, had traveled to Russia for work but ended up in the Russian Armed Forces.

Previously, under similar circumstances, the Kazakhstani authorities had succeeded in securing the return of their compatriots from the Kremlin.
